A collection of artwork by children ages 2 to 15 undergoing cancer treatment at Methodist Children’s Hospital, San Antonio is now on display in the Briscoe Library 3rd floor lobby. The exhibit includes collages like the one pictured here, by a 7-year-old artist, and several paintings that were created in Tracy’s Kids Art Therapy Program. The program helps young cancer patients and their families cope with the emotional stress and trauma of cancer and its treatment. The patients, their siblings and parents are encouraged to express their feelings on their treatment experiences through art and play therapy.
The art program, which is offered at no charge to the patient and his or her siblings, provides a child-centered, open studio approach for children to interact while they are receiving infusions and other treatments. In addition to Methodist Children’s Hospital, San Antonio, the program has three locations in the Washington, DC area. To learn more about Tracy’s Kids, visit www.tracyskids.org. The exhibit will be on display through March 2014.
