The UT Health Center Libraries have received a 2015-2016 Resource Library Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) South Central Chapter (SCR). The award supports outreach services provided to communities in a 33-county area in South Texas through the Briscoe Library in San Antonio, the Ramirez Library in Harlingen and Laredo Regional Campus Library. The mission of the NN/LM is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to medical information and improving the public’s access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health. As one of 8 NN/LM Resource Libraries in Texas, the goal of the UT Health Science Center Libraries’ outreach initiative is twofold: (1) to provide health professionals with the means to support evidence-based practice, and (2) to provide health care consumers with the tools to make informed health care decisions. Through outreach activities, the Libraries promote resources produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Three of the many resources include MedlinePlus for access to reliable consumer health information, WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders), and PubMed for access to over 24 million citations from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Many of the resources of the NLM are available as mobile apps or sites. Library services include a wide variety of activities including classes, demonstrations, and participation in health fairs, and professional conferences.
