Damon Tweedy, MD Speaks at UT Health Science Center

On April 19, 2016, a crowd of 500 enthusiastic attendees from the UT Health Science Center San Antonio and the greater San Antonio community gathered in the Holly Auditorium to hear Damon Tweedy, MD deliver the Frank Bryant Jr, MD Memorial Lecture in Medical Ethics. Dr Tweedy is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and a staff physician at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Author of Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflections on Race and Medicine, Dr. Tweedy shared his personal experiences as one of very few African American medical students, interns, and residents at Duke University Medical School and Hospital. He also discussed the causes of health disparities, especially in African American communities, and explored why “being black can be bad for your health.”

Prior to his presentation, Damon Tweedy, MD met with leaders from the Student National Medical Association and members of the Student Advisory Council from the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics. Following his lecture, Dr. Tweedy signed copies of his book for members of the audience for an hour and a half!
