Laredo Regional Campus Library: Computer Class for Stroke Support Group

Adapting resources from the NIHSenior Health website, Laredo staff Erika Silva and Cindy Carrillo provided a beginning computer class for members of the Laredo Stroke Support Group. Not only did the group learn basic computer skills, but they also started on a path that will allow them to access reliable online health information. The UT Health Laredo Regional Campus Library works with community organizations to support the development of health information literacy skills. Health literacy is a key, if not the most important factor in determining an individual’s health status.

For more information on developments in health literacy see the following:

The Role of Universal Health Literacy Precautions in Minimizing “Medspeak” and Promoting Shared Decision Making. AMA Journal of Ethics. March 2017, Volume 19, Number 3: 296-303.

The entire March issue of the (open access) AMA Journal of Ethics is devoted to Language Hierarchy in Medicine.
