“Pathways to Health: Policy, Practices and Partners” Public Health Conference

Sponsored by the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and Texas Public Health Association, “Pathways to Health: Policy, Practices and Partners” will be held in San Antonio March 5-7, 2008.

The conference is recommended for Epidemiologists, Physicians, Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Registered Sanitarians, Health Educators (CHES), Public Health Administrators, and other public health professionals and partners.

15th Annual HIV/AIDS Update Conference – South Padre Island, Texas

On October 24-26, 2007 the Valley AIDS Council, Inc. 15th Annual HIV/AIDS Update Conference will be held on South Padre Island, Texas.

This conference is designed for Physicians, Health Care Providers, Nurses, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Case Managers, Educators, Mental Health Care Providers, Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Outreach Workers, Substance Abuse Counselors, Probation Officers and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors.

Conference tracks include: Prevention, Services, Clinical and HIV Early Intervention.

16th National Symposium on Juvenile Services

San Antonio hosted the 16th National Symposium on Juvenile Services on October 10th-12th. The 3-day event expected over 400 juvenile justice professionals to attend for  training workshops. Training topics covered the care, management and programming for youth in detention centers. The symposium is sponsored by the National Partnership for Juvenile Services (NPJS). The NPJS mission is to: advocate for youth,  families, and communities, promote best practices and standards, and provide professional development for practitioners serving at-risk and delinquent youth. UTHSCSA Libraries staff member Peg Seger exhibited at the symposium to introduce MedlinePlus and other NN/LM resources to those attending.

16th Texas HIV/STD Conference – May 18-22, 2008

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) HIV/STD Program, in partnership with the Center for Health Training and the Workers Assistance Program, is hosting the 16th Annual Texas HIV/STD Conference in Austin, Texas on May 18-33, 2008. This conference targets HIV/STD health professionals serving Texans living with and affected by HIV and other STDs. Goals include enhancing the capacity of HIV/STD health professionals to effectively serve Texans living with and affected by HIV and other STDs. Continuing education credit will be offered to participants. Early registration ends April 4, 2008

2011 10th Annual Summer Institute on Evidence-Based Practice

Hosted annually by the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing, the Summer Institute is attended by clinicians, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, librarians, researchers, educators and administrators from around the country and abroad. The focus for the conference this year was healthcare quality and safety. Librarians Linda Levy, pictured here, and Peg Seger represented the UT Health Science Center Briscoe library at the Institute held in downtown San Antonio on June 30th and July 1st. Attendees were particularly interested in learning more about  searching PubMed this year. PubMed ® “Provides free access to MEDLINE®, the NLM® database of indexed citations and abstracts to medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, health care, and preclinical sciences journal articles.”

2012 Texas Emergency Management Conference

Photograph of a San Antonio Fire Department fire truckThe University of Texas Health Science Center Briscoe Library participated in the 2012 Texas Emergency Management Conference in downtown San Antonio on April 2nd through the 4th. Sponsored by the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the conference brings together representatives of law enforcement, border and port security, transportation and cyber security, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, Texas Military Forces, voluntary organizations and private sector partners. Patrick Lemelle, Outreach Library Assistant, and Peg Seger, Head of Outreach Services, provided information and demonstrations on disaster information resources available from the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

One of the featured NLM programs demonstrated by the Briscoe Library representatives was the WISER program.  WISER  is an information system designed and maintained by the National Library of Medicine for first responders and all emergency personnel who need critical information at their fingertips.

WISER is a system designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents. WISER provides a wide range of information on hazardous substances, including substance identification support, physical characteristics, human health information, and containment and suppression advice.”

The conference became all too real this year when up to a dozen tornadoes hit the Dallas-Fort Worth area and emergency management operations were mobilized on the convention floor.

3 pilot sites for the Hispanic Aging Initiative in South Texas

Three areas of South Texas — the San Antonio, McAllen, and Houston metropolitan areas — are among eight areas nationwide to be selected as pilot sites in the US Department of Health and Human Service’s new Hispanic Aging Initiative.

The pilot project is designed “to help communities work together to develop coordinated strategies for improving Hispanic elders’ access to important benefits, including the new Medicare prescription drug and prevention benefits as well as low-cost evidence-based prevention programs . . . and other initiatives that can reduce health disparities”, according to a HHS’s press release.

4th Annual Community Service Learning Conference

Better Together: Academic-Community Partnerships to Improve Health

Online registration is now open for the UT Health Science Center’s 4th Annual Community Service Learning Conference. The conference will take place April 7, 2011, 9 am to 6: 30 pm in the  School of Nursing’s Hurd Auditorium and the Parman Auditorium Foyer. Free CEU credits are available for Certified Health Education Specialists, dental assistants, dental hygienists, nurses, physicians, physician’s assistants, pharmacists, and social workers.

This conference is free and open to the public. Lunch is provided for those who register online by March 25, 2011. Limited funds are also available for student travel from the San Antonio extension campuses.

Conference Objectives

  1. To share best practices and scholarship in community service learning across the disciplines of the University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center with a focus on effective academic-community partnerships.
  2. To bring together an inter-professional group of UT Health Science Center students, faculty, and staff from across the state with community partners to foster service learning collaborations.
  3. To highlight existing UT Health Science System community service learning projects and future opportunities with community partners.
  4. To recognize and reward excellence in community service learning within the UT Health Science System.

6th Annual San Antonio Health Literacy Conference

A record 152 people attended the 6th Annual San Antonio Health Literacy Conference held in downtown San Antonio on Friday, October 8th. Sponsored by the San Antonio Health Literacy Initiative (SAHLI), the theme of this years’ conference was Improving Health Literacy Across the Lifespan: Growing Wiser and Healthier. SAHLI is a program of the San Antonio Health Cooperative and brings together local organizations for collaboration. The annual conference is held to: provide information, tools, and techniques to healthcare professionals, educators, nonprofit healthcare organizations, and the public. Conference attendees were able to select from a wide variety of workshops given throughout the day on health literacy topics. Poster sessions offered additional information and resources. Keynote speaker Jerald Winakur, MD, FACP, CMD provided a fitting end to the day with his presentation on Ethical Caregiving in Aging America: Challenges and Opportunities.
