Intall the Library Printers on a Mac

This section of the instructions applies to Mac OSX versions 10.6 “Snow Leopard” and above only.

Installing Popup

To install Popup 8.0 for Mac OS X, obtain the Popup installer and run it as follows:

  1. Log in using an adminsistrator account.
  2. Download the file Pharos Download to your desktop.
  3. Double click the download, unzip the file, and this will create a file called Popup.dmg.
  4. Double click Popup.dmg, and a new window will open. Double click Popup.pkg that appears in the new window.
  5. After you have double clicked Popup.pkg you will run through a series of promps; accept the terms of services, select the default destination, and allow the installation.
  6. Now the Pharos Popup will now be automatically launched every time you log in.

Configuring Printers

    1. Open System Preferences and click on Print & Fax icon
    2. After selecting the Print & Fax icon select the + icon located on the left hand side of the dialog box. If you receive an error message, make sure that your lock located on the bottom of the dialog box is unlocked. If your lock is not unlocked select the lock and log in as the computers administrator.

3. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard and click anywhere on the toolbar. From the popup menu that appears, select Customize Toolbar

4. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog.

Black and White Printer Instructions (Library)

    1. After you have selected add a printer, and selected advanced, you will be brought to the advanced prompt. You will need to enter the following information to properly access the printer:
      Type: Pharos Print Server
      Device: Another Device
      URL: popup://129.111.57.203/lab9000ps
      Name: Black and White
      Location: Library 3rd Floor
      Print Using: Use the dropdown and pick the “Generic PostScript Printer” option and click Add…

2.  After clicking Add, you are given the ability to install printer options. Select “Duplex Printing Unit” option if you wish to be able to print double sided and select Ok.

3. You have now successfully added the library’s black and white printer.

Color Printer Instructions (Library)

  1. The color printer instructions are essentially the same, however, you must replace the first step with the appropriate information:
    Type: Pharos Printer Server
    Device: Another Device
    URL: popup://129.111.57.203/lib-colorpcl
    Name: Color
    Location: Library 3rd Floor
  2. Use the dropdown and pick the “Generic PostScript Printer” option and click Add…
  3. Finally, to ensure that your computer is connecting to the printers make sure that you have green dots below the printer name in the Print & Fax section of System Preferences.

Printer Instructions (Research Administration Building)

  1. The RAB printer instructions are essentially the same, however, you must replace the first step with the appropriate information:
    Type: Pharos Printer Server
    Device: Another Device
    URL: popup://129.111.57.203/ResearchAdminBldg
    Name: Research Administration Building
    Location: RAB
  2. Use the dropdown and pick the “Generic PostScript Printer” option and click Add…
  3. Finally, to ensure that your computer is connecting to the printers make sure that you have green dots below the printer name in the Print & Fax section of System Preferences.

Printer Instructions (Nursing School)

  1. The Nursing printer instructions are essentially the same, however, you must replace the first step with the appropriate information:
    Type: Pharos Printer Server
    Device: Another Device
    URL: popup://129.111.57.203/Nursing
    Name: Nursing School Lounge
    Location: Nursing School Lounge
  2. Use the dropdown and pick the “Generic PostScript Printer” option and click Add…
  3. Finally, to ensure that your computer is connecting to the printers make sure that you have green dots below the printer name in the Print & Fax section of System Preferences.

Printer Instructions (Dental School)

  1. Type: Pharos Printer Server
    Device: Another Device
    URL: popup://129.111.57.203/Dentalschool
    Name: Dental School Lounge
    Location: Dental School Lounge
  2. Use the dropdown and pick the “Generic PostScript Printer” option and click Add…
  3. Finally, to ensure that your computer is connecting to the printers make sure that you have green dots below the printer name in the Print & Fax section of System Preferences.

Print from My Mobile Device

This section of the instructions applies to both Android and iOS mobile devices.

Please note: if you have already registered a device with Mobile Print, you can skip below to the how to use section. Once registered, the following printers can be selected via mobile print:

Please Note: After selecting Print in step 7 below, the print job will automatically begin to print to the selected Printer.

Use a Computer

Computers are available for current affiliates and library visitors. Access and availability vary by location.

  • Current students, faculty, and staff have unlimited use during business hours
  • Library guests are limited to one hour per day

All computer use is governed by the Computer Use Policy.

Library Visitors

  • Briscoe Library (San Antonio): visitors must sign in and present valid ID at the Circulation Desk for a guest computer access code. Visitor computers are located only on the 3rd floor and access is restricted to one hour per day. Time may be extended on a case by case basis if the user is researching health related topics.
  • Ramirez Library (Harlingen): visitors must sign in and present valid ID at the Information Desk for a guest computer access code. Visitor computers are located near the library entrance and access is restricted to one hour per day. Time may be extended on a case by case basis if the user is researching health related topics.
  • Laredo Library: visitors must register with UT Police before using the library. The UT Police sub-station is located in the D.D. Hachar Building room 1.200. Once a visitor has registered with police they are asked to sign in at the circulation desk upon entering the library.

Frequently Asked Questions

What software is available on library computers?

  • At Briscoe: All computers have Microsoft Office and internet access. A limited number of computers at Pod D have flatbed scanners with either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements available. Adobe Professional is available at two of the scanner computers. SPSS and SAS are also installed at Pod D for use by UT Health Science Center affiliates. In the visitor computer area, one flatbed scanner is available with Photoshop Elements.
  • At Ramirez: All computers have Microsoft Office and internet access. Two computers at Pods 1 & 5 have flatbed scanners with either Adobe Professional or Photoshop available.
  • At Laredo: All computers have Microsoft Office and internet access. One scanner is available.

What username and password do I use to log in to library computers?

UT Health Science Center faculty, staff, and students will use their UTHSCSA Domain Password. These credentials are the same ones currently used to log in to other campus systems, including the inside.uthscsa.edu portal, the HSCAir wireless network, the Knowledge Center training system, and Blackboard.

Visitors will use guest computer access codes. See the Library Visitor section for details.

What if I don’t remember my password?

You can reset your password one of two ways:

  • Visit https://pwr.uthscsa.edu if you previously set up your account for self-service password reset
  • Bring your HSC badge to the IM Client Support Service Desk in MED 411L (San Antonio only)

What do I do when I’m finished using a library computer?

For your security, it is important that you Log Off or Restart the computer when finished. You are responsible for any computer use or misuse that occurs under your login. On Windows computers, you can log off by clicking the “Start” button in the lower left and then selecting “Log Off”, and then clicking OK to confirm.

 Do you have wireless internet?

All campuses have wireless available to current affiliates with a UTHSCSA Domain Password.  Wireless is not available to visitors, but Briscoe and Ramirez have a limited number of network lines available for guest laptop users.
