Intall the Library Printers on a Mac

This section of the instructions applies to Mac OSX 10.6 “Snow Leopard” only.

Installing Popup

To install Popup 8.0 for Mac OS X, obtain the Popup installer and run it as follows:

  1. Log in using an adminsistrator account.
  2. Download the file Pharos Download to your desktop.
  3. Double click the download, unzip the file, and this will create a file called Popup.dmg.
  4. Double click Popup.dmg, and a new window will open. Double click Popup.pkg that appears in the new window.
  5. After you have double clicked Popup.pkg you will run through a series of promps; accept the terms of services, select the default destination, and allow the installation.
  6. Now the Pharos Popup will now be automatically launched every time you log in.

Configuring Printers

    1. Open System Preferences and click on Print & Fax icon
    2. After selecting the Print & Fax icon select the + icon located on the left hand side of the dialog box. If you receive an error message, make sure that your lock located on the bottom of the dialog box is unlocked. If your lock is not unlocked select the lock and log in as the computers administrator.

    1. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard and click anywhere on the toolbar. From the popup menu that appears, select Customize Toolbar

    1. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog.

Black and White Printer Instructions

    1. After you have selected add a printer, and selected advanced, you will be brought to the advanced prompt. You will need to enter the following information to properly access the printer:
      Type: Pharos Print Server
      Device: Another Device
      URL: popup://129.111.57.203/lab9000ps
      Name: Black and White
      Location: Library
      Print Using: Use the dropdown and pick the Select Printer Software…

    1. A second popup window will appear. Use the search box to find the correct printer software to associate with the black and white printer: HP LasJet 9000 Series

    1. You are given the ability to install printer options. Do not select any options, and hit continue.

  1. You have now successfully added the libraries black and white printer.

Color Printer Instructions

  1. The color printer instructions are essentially the same, however, you must replace the first step with the appropriate infromation:
    Type: Pharos Printer Server
    Device: Another Device
    URL: popup//129.111.57.203/lib-colorpcl
    Name: Color
    Location: Library
  2. The printer that you will search for using the Select Printer Software… is an HP CP3525
  3. Finally, to check and make sure that your computer is connecting to the computers make sure that you have green dots by the printers in the Print & Fax section of System Preferences.

Print and Copy Services

How do I pay for photocopying and printing?

Photocopies and print jobs can be paid for with personal or departmental account cards. Cards can be used at photocopiers in the Library and at select photocopiers in the Nursing School, the School of Health Professions, and at the Ramirez Medical Library – RAHC. They can also be used at release stations at the Nursing School, School of Health Professions, School of Public Health, MD Labs, Ramirez Medical Library, and the Laredo Library.

Where are printers and photocopiers located?

Black and white laser printers are located on the third floor of the Briscoe Library, and at the Laredo Library, Ramirez Library, and the Jones/TRP Library.
A color laser printer is available on the third floor of the Briscoe Library.
Photocopiers can be found in the Briscoe Library, the Nursing School, the School of  Health Professions, Laredo Library, Jones/TRP Library, and at the Ramirez Medical Library/RAHC. We do not have any color photocopiers. (Use a scanner instead!)

Can I print from my laptop?

Yes, if you have a laptop with wireless network access, or are plugged in to our network, you can print to the Libraries printers. You will need to install the “Pharos popups” software before you can print. Regular printing charges apply.

My card doesn’t seem to be working. Who can help me?

Please contact Library staff for assistance with your copy card. For assistance with your departmental account card, please contact the Library Administration Office at (210) 567-2400.

How much does it cost?

All photocopies are 10 cents per page. Black and white printing is also 10 cents per page. Color printing costs 75 cents per page.

How do I create a copy card personal account?

Copy cards are debit accounts created using the magnetic strip on a HSC ID or Texas Driver License. You can bring an appropriate ID to the Circulation Desk at each Library and create an account from $1 to $50 in value. Deposits can be made by cash, check or credit card. You can also create copy card accounts and add value to existing accounts at the Add Value Station at the Nursing School copier area. The Add Value Station only accepts paper money. Value can also be added with a credit card by calling the Briscoe Library Circulation Desk at (210) 567-2440.
Library users who do not have a HSC ID or Texas Driver License should speak with Library staff about borrowing a Guest card.

What is a departmental printing account card?

A departmental printing account card may be used to pay for photocopying and printing at all photocopiers and Pharos Stations in the Library, at a cost of 11 cents per copy. UTHSC Departments may obtain account cards by contacting the Library Administration Office at (210) 567-2400. The accounts are billed monthly to UTHSC departments and have no cash value. Check with your department for the procedure to obtain a departmental account card. Departmental account cards are available for pickup in the Library Administration Office on Monday-Friday between 8-5 pm. You are encouraged to write your name and telephone number on your card as soon as you receive it.

Where are the photocopiers located?

Photocopiers can be found in the Briscoe Library, the Nursing School, the School of Health Professions, Laredo Library, Jones/TRP Library, and at the Ramirez Medical Library/RAHC. We do not have any color photocopiers.

Print from a Windows laptop

Please note: When installing this software in the Library please use a wired network connection. Do not use a wireless connection.

Pharos Popups does not currently support 64-bit Windows Vista.

Currently only the Briscoe Library printers are available for download.

  1. Download the Pharos Popups installation file for the location that you wish to be able print to:
    1. Briscoe Library
    2. Nursing School
    3. School of Health Professionals
    4. Laredo Library
    5. RAHC Library
  2. If you get the “Do you want to run or save this file?” box, click Run.
  3. If you get the “The publisher could not be verified” warning, click Run.
  4. The installation window will open. Click Start. It will take several minutes for the installation to finish.
  5. When the installation finishes, click Finish.

Note: If you wish to install more than once location, simply install each location individually.

Print from my Laptop

In order to print to a UTHSC Libraries printer from your own laptop, you need to install the “Pharos Popups”.
