One Community One Book: Healing Garden Discussion Group

1 Mar 2016 - 05:30 PM - 06:30 PM

The Garden & Health Interest Group, the Discussions in Medical Ethics Group, and the Briscoe Library are partnering to host a One Community One Book Discussion Group  in the Healing Garden, located in front of the Briscoe Library, on March 1 at 5:30 PM.

This year’s One Community One Book selection is God’s Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine by Victoria Sweet, MD, PhD. In this book, the author weaves stories of her experiences caring for patients at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco, the last almshouse in the country, with her studies of 12th-century German abbess Hildegard von Bingen and the practice of medieval medicine.

Conversation will focus on Hildegard von Bingen’s teachings on viriditas, the body’s natural ability to heal, and on her view of the body as a plant and the health care provider as a gardener. For more information on these topics, read Chapter 4: The Miraculous Healing of Terry Becker. A condensed excerpt is available from HuffPost Healthy Living.

Ethical discussions will explore such cases as those of Jimmy, a schizophrenic, and the right to refuse psychiatric treatment found in Chapter 3: The Visit of Dee and Tee, Health-Care Efficiency Experts. Also consider Mr. Bramwell and the nature of dementia from Chapter 7: Dancing to the Tune of Glenn Miller.

Join us for an evening of interesting discussion. Some blankets will be provided or BYOB (Bring Your Own Blanket!). Light refreshments will be served.
