An exhibit, The Artistic Style of Carlos Machado, MD: Selected Illustrations from the Netter Art Collection, is currently on display on the third floor of the Briscoe Library.

In the mid-1990s Carlos Machado was selected to continue the work of Dr. Frank Netter, a 20th century physician and artist who had come to be known as “Medicine’s Michelangelo.” Starting in the late 1940s, Netter had initiated a series of illustrations that were based on painstaking research and study of the human body. He developed groundbreaking techniques for presenting anatomical information in ways that enhance its accessibility to students, and over the next 40 years the collection grew into an eight-part series, with each part depicting a body system. It is a classic resource on human anatomy for students of medicine and the health sciences.

Carlos Machado, who received his medical degree at the Faculdade Medicina de Teresopolis in Rio de Janeiro and later trained in cardiology at Santa Casa de Misericordia, has been a principal illustrator for the Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations for the past 19 years. Dr. Machado has added over 1,000 new illustrations to the collection, and also updated many of the Netter images to reflect current medical practice and knowledge. His work can be seen in Netter Presenter, a database containing images from the Netter: Atlas of Human Anatomy 5th Edition.

Netter Presenter can be accessed from the library’s database pages.

The exhibit will remain on display through the summer. It is on loan from NetterImages.com, ©Elsevier.

For the fourth year in a row, the UT Health Science Center Briscoe Library participated in the San Antonio Community Health Worker (CHW) /Promotor(a) Summit. The conference, held on March 22, attracted more than 100 area community health workers and students.

Dr. Thomas Schlenker, Director of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, spoke on major health issues impacting the city. Other topics covered during the day-long event included: Developing a Career as a Promotor(a), CHW Certification Update and Legislative Action, Clinical Trials, Family Violence, and Colonia Health.

The conference was sponsored by Northwest Vista College and Christus Santa Rosa Healthcare. Peg Seger, Head of Outreach Services and Patrick Lemelle, Outreach Services Assistant, demonstrated National Library of Medicine resources for health consumers and the public health workforce.

“Senior Moments” of Aging Health Fair at the Laredo Regional Campus

Peg Seger demonstrated consumer health resources from the National Library of Medicine at the “Senior Moments” of Aging Health Fair held on the Laredo Regional Campus on March 23. Over 60 people visited the library exhibit table, including Laredo community residents, nursing students, and local area health professionals.

The library’s exhibit space was located adjacent to a Tai Chi demonstration area where nursing students and campus administration alike took advantage of a free lesson. Seniors learned about resources including MedlinePlus, where they can view tutorials on diabetes and other health topics, and NIHSenior Health, which provides information on topics for those over 60. Nursing students in attendance expressed interest in learning more about MedlinePlus patient handouts and the PubMed database.

Texas Emergency Management Conference

The Texas Emergency Management Conference was held March 25-28 at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in downtown San Antonio. The conference attracts around 3,000 elected officials, first responders, emergency managers, and decision makers from across Texas, and provides jurisdictions the opportunity to learn about innovative products and services.

The Briscoe Library began exhibiting at this conference last year, to provide demonstrations of resources available through the National Library of Medicine. Pictured here is Briscoe Library Outreach Services Assistant Patrick Lemelle, explaining the use of WISER — Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders– to a conference attendee. WISER, a free online resource provided by NLM, is accessible from mobile devices.
