Traveling Exhibit: African Americans in Civil War Medicine

A traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine has been installed at the entrance of the Briscoe Library and will remain on display until July 8. The exhibit is entitled Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine. Many historians have written about medical care during the American Civil War, but the participation and contributions of African Americans as nurses, surgeons, and hospital workers often has been overlooked. The participation of these men and women in the war effort challenged the prescribed notions of both race and gender, and pushed the boundaries of the role of blacks in America. Learn more about those whose desire to participate in the cause for freedom led them to transcend class, education, and social position in the exhibition Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine.
