On September 17th, a very accomplished group of 5th and 6th grade girls from Troop 128 got some pointers from UT Health Science Center librarians about Internet Safety, Health Literacy, and Community Outreach. A special bookmark, shown here, was designed just for the occasion. The girls and their leaders are planning a return trip to learn more about how to do research for an upcoming community nutrition project. The project is part of the activities the girls will complete in working toward the Silver Award which is the highest award a Cadette can receive. Through the project, the girls will help a community by providing education about healthy food choices at a homeless shelter for women.

The girls also met with President William L. Henrich, M.D. during their campus visit and got a full tour of the Briscoe Library including the rare books in the P. I. Nixon Medical Historical Library and the new library 3-D printer in action. Girls from the troop attend Saint Matthew Catholic School and their troop leader, Sandra Sanchez-Reilly, M.D. is a member of the faculty at the UT Health Science Center. Troop co-leader Stephanie Rowan RN, MSN, is a research nurse at the School of Dentistry.

The Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, headquartered in San Antonio, serves over 23,500 Girl Scouts across 21 counties.
