Full House for Nixon Lecture by Ronald M. Stewart, MD, FACS

The Friends of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library Lecture Series continued in the new year with a full house for speaker Ronald Stewart, MD, FACS on the topic History of EMS and Trauma Systems. Dr. Stewart graduated from medical school and completed his surgical residency at UT Health at San Antonio. Following residency, he completed a two-year Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He currently serves as the UT Health Professor and Chair/Dr. Witten B. Russ Chair in Surgery. Since 1996 Dr. Stewart has served as the Board Chair of the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council for Trauma. In May 2000, Governor George W. Bush appointed Dr. Stewart to the Governor’s Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Advisory Council where he has served since that time. He currently is the Vice Chair and the senior member of the Council. He served as the chair of the South Texas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma for six years and followed for another six years as the ACS COT Region VI Chief (Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas). He currently serves on the national ACS Committee on Trauma.

Future Health Science Students Tour Briscoe Library

In April and May, students interested in health science careers from the San Antonio Cornerstone Christian Academy and Eagle Pass students in the Southwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC) College Enrichment Program, came to Briscoe Library to become more familiar with a health science library. Students learned about health science resources, were able to visit student study areas, and were treated to a virtual reality and 3-D printing demonstration in The Hub.

Harry Potter’s World

Illustration of medieval medical practices by Hieronymus Brunschwig, 1494The UT Health Science Center Libraries are pleased to announce that Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine will open in the Briscoe Library on October 11, 2010.

The traveling exhibit, produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and coordinated by the American Library Association, uses materials from the historical collections of the National Library of Medicine to explore Harry Potter’s world and its roots in Renaissance traditions.

The study of Renaissance science and medicine adds a fascinating dimension to the Harry Potter stories for both children and adults. For example, alchemist Nicolas Flamel, who is fictionally featured in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was a real 15th-century scholar whose experiments with metals influenced the development of modern chemistry.

A series of programs has been planned in connection with the exhibit, which will be in the Briscoe Library from October 11 to November 6, 2010.

2018 Image of Research Photography Competition Rules, Guidelines, and Details

The Image of Research competition is an opportunity for UT Health San Antonio students from all five schools to capture, share, and present the essence of their research in a single visual image. This competition and its accompanying exhibition showcase students’ creative visual conceptualization of their research.

Submission deadline: September 21, 2018.
Announcement of the winners will occur via email at the end of September and there will be a reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, November 1st.

The First Place Award is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Second Place, Third Place, and IPE Awards are sponsored by Academic Faculty, and Student Affairs.

Multiple students from the same research group may also submit as individuals, as long as they use their own photograph/image.
A group entry should consist of two or more students working on the same project. A separate award will be given for an Interprofessional Education category (two or more students from at least two different disciplines).

What should the image be?
The image should represent students’ research, whether concrete or abstract. The submission will also include a brief narrative that articulates the connection between the image and your research. Your narrative should be written in a clear, concise manner that captures the attention and imagination of both specialists and general audiences.
The image, while in the format of still photography, may depict 2D, mixed media, or 3D content. Animation and/or video content is outside the scope of this competition and will not be accepted.

Research
While all students at UT Health San Antonio perform research throughout their academic career, research takes place in multiple settings and is framed in a diverse manner. Broadly speaking, research is an iterative process that involves asking questions, seeking answers from multiple information sources, and remaining open to new or contradictory ideas. The way research and the research process are defined frequently vary by discipline. Image of Research welcomes submissions from novice to advanced researchers in any discipline reflecting any stage in the research process in any research that you’re involved with in some capacity.

The submission will be judged on three criteria:
Connection between image, text, and research
Originality
Visual Impact

Individual and group entries will be judged together to determine one first place, one second place, and one third place winner. A separate award will be given to one group entry for the Interprofessional Education category (a group of students from two or more disciplines).

The entrant must be principal creator of the image. Third party content can be used (for example, mixed with other content), but submitting a third party image unaltered is not permitted. Entrants are responsible for ensuring that any use of images or materials that are under copyright by a third party either falls under fair use or that relevant permissions have been sought, that no copyright has been infringed, and that any necessary release forms have been signed.

What is required for submission?
A title of less than 100 characters
A 100-200 word narrative that articulates the connection between the image and your research.
Images should be of the best quality and must meet the following requirements:
Maximum file size of 50 MB.
Minimum resolution of 300 ppi.
Image must be in JPEG, PNG, or other image file format.
Submissions that fail to meet these criteria may need to be changed.
Please keep in mind that all submissions will be printed and mounted for display and may be used for other functions in print or digital format.

If people other than yourself are present in your image, please provide a Model Authorization Release Form for each subject with your submission.

Briscoe Library’s 3rd Annual Image of Research Photography Competition is an opportunity for UT Health San Antonio students, faculty, and staff from all five schools to capture, share, and present the essence of their research in a single visual image. This competition and its accompanying exhibition showcase the UT Health community’s creative visual conceptualization of their research.
For the first time, we are introducing a Faculty/Staff Award category for the 2020 Image of Research Competition.

Image of Research Exhibit and Awards Reception

Briscoe Library’s Image of Research Photography Competition received a number of outstanding entries from UT Health San Antonio students. We welcome you to come view all of the submissions in our Image of Research Exhibit located on the newly completed gallery wall at the entrance of the library.

The library will be holding the Image of Research Awards Reception during Student Appreciation Week on Thursday, November 1st from 2pm to 3pm. All are welcome!

John Calhoon, MD, Experiences of a Congenital Heart Surgeon

In February, the Friends of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library Lecture Series welcomed John Calhoon, MD, to speak on the history of heart surgery and his experiences as a congenital heart surgeon. Recounting his experiences a boy learning by his surgeon father’s side, Dr. Calhoon described how he is able to pass on the knowledge and wisdom gained from many of these formative experiences to his students and those who will become our future surgeons. After hearing a thorough review of the history of modern heart surgery and enjoying many humorous and touching stories from Dr. Calhoon’ s career, the lecture audience sat rapt with attention as he ended his presentation with a video of his ground-breaking operation on the heart of a 2-day-old infant.

Dr. Calhoon obtained his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 1981. He is board certified in Thoracic Surgery and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. He joined the group in 1989 and is professor and founding chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

His current interests include complex congenital heart surgery, heart and lung transplantation, complex adult cardiac surgery, the Ross procedure, less invasive cardiac surgery, and improving education and patient care. Nationally, he has served as President of the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association and Secretary of the Southern Thoracic Surgery Association.

He is currently president of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education, a member of the Joint Council on Thoracic Surgery Education Board, an at-large director of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and has served as chair of the American Board of Thoracic Surgeons. Locally, he has been chairman of the Dominion Country Club and president of the local American Heart Association affiliate. He is a founder and board member of HeartGift San Antonio, an organization that sponsors charitable lifesaving congenital heart repair for children around the world.

Library Fiesta Events on April 24

Save the date for the Student Fiesta and Fiesta Open House on April 24.

The Student Fiesta will run from 11am to 2pm with lots of fun activities and refreshments.

The Fiesta Open House from 4pm to 7pm will showcase the collection of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library with a focus on local San Antonio history in light of the Tricentennial.
