Librarians Attend Annual Medical Library Association Conference

The Medical Library Association held its annual meeting in Austin, TX on May 15-20. UT Health Science Center librarians traveled from San Antonio and Harlingen to attend the conference.  Jonquil Feldman, director of Briscoe Library and Outreach Services co-chaired the committee that organized the program for this meeting. The plenary speaker was Dr. Mae Jemison, a former NASA astronaut who was the first African-American woman in space. A physician and engineer, Dr. Jemison leads the 100 Year Starship project, which proposes to leverage advances in technology and medicine that will make interstellar travel possible and will at the same time transform life on earth. The speaker for the closing session was Dr. Eszter Hargittai, professor at Northwestern University, who spoke about her research on Internet functionality of people college of age and older. The conference was attended by over 1,100 librarians from the U.S., and Canada as well as from countries in Europe, Australia, Asia and South America.

Kathy Carter, assistant director of the Ramirez Library at the RAHC in Harlingen, TX attended a class before the meeting and took advantage of opportunities to network with colleagues. Peg Seger presented a poster, “Expanding the limits of outreach education and collaboration,” co-authored with Rajia Tobia, Jonquil Feldman, Kathy Carter, Paula Winkler, Chris Frei and Grace Lee. Several librarians took advantage of one-day passes to meet face-to-face with exhibitors who represent the publishers and organizations who license e-journals, e-books and databases.
