Liaisons Teach Youth in St. Matthew’s STEM Club
On September 19, and for the third year in a row, the Library Liaisons visited and presented to the St. Matthew Catholic School STEM Club. The club consists of approximately 45 highly-motivated 4th-8th graders who meet weekly at 6:30 a.m. to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics activities. Many of the students are preparing for their annual science fair. They were divided into two classrooms based on grade level and learned about formulating research questions and using reliable sources, particularly websites. They were also tasked with finding STEM-related information using the National Library of Medicine’s K-12 resources.
The mother of a fourth grader who attended the presentation provided the following feedback regarding the outreach:
“Wanted to let you know Eduardo loved the stem presentation yesterday. He came home and told me what he researched, how, and what he learned with his research. It was pretty neat to listen to him talk about it all. Wow! Please tell your colleagues thank you!!! Very very impactful.”
The STEM Club is led by St. Matthew’s parent Sandra Sanchez-Reilly, M.D., who is a UT Health faculty member in the Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology and Palliative Medicine.
