Merger & Integration of Libraries
News, updates, and answers to common questions about the integration of our libraries.
Welcome!
The UT San Antonio Libraries and the Health Science Center Libraries (made up of the Dolph Briscoe Jr., Library and the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library) are committed to working collaboratively to expand access to library resources, collections, and services for all students, faculty, and staff. We anticipate that the merger and integration of libraries will evolve over time.
- In Year 1, each library will operate as a distinct and separate library while beginning to work collaboratively to best meet the information needs of the UT San Antonio community.
- Expanding access to electronic resources will need to be negotiated with each vendor for each resource, and the ability to offer expanded access will be based on available funding.
- Library services will continue to be provided by librarians and library staff at each library location.
- Access to physical library spaces and physical collections will vary by location – the FAQs below provide more detailed information.
Will I continue to have access to the library resources and services I had as a Health Science Center student, faculty, or staff member before the merger?
Yes. Health Science Center students, faculty, and staff will continue to use the library website to access electronic resources and services – both on campus and remotely – using your Health Science Center ID and password.
Over time, access will expand strategically across both institutions. The goal is to incrementally expand access to e-journals, databases, and e-books across both institutions, balancing disciplinary needs, licensing terms, and costs.
We’ll keep you informed, and any updates or changes will also be reflected on the library’s database page.
Will Health Science Center students, faculty, and staff have access to UTSA’s electronic resources?
Health Science Center faculty, staff, and students do not have remote access to UTSA’s electronic resources due to current licensing terms with publishers. However, UT Health faculty, staff, and students may access UTSA electronic resources while on site at UTSA at either the Main Campus or Downtown Campus libraries. A few desktop computers in the John Peace Library and Downtown Library are reserved for non-UTSA users. To acquire a temporary log-on ID, you will need to show picture identification and sign in at the Front Desks of the John Peace and Downtown Libraries.
Dual enrolled students and faculty or staff with cross appointments must use the appropriate login credentials to access electronic resources from either library.
Can we use each other’s open access agreements, association memberships, or subscriptions (e.g., Academic Analytics, InCites, ORCID, JCR)?
Currently, no. Each of these types of agreements is an individual license, subscription, or membership between the vendor and the respective library. Each of these types of resources will need to be negotiated as a joint or merged license, subscription, or membership for the newly merged institution.
Will Health Science Center students, faculty, and staff have access to the UTSA Libraries?
Health Science Center students, faculty, and staff have access to UTSA Libraries’ public spaces when they visit the UTSA campuses. UT Health faculty, staff and students may not reserve study rooms or Faculty Center rooms in UTSA Libraries.
Students in dual enrollment programs have access to both the UTSA Libraries and the Health Science Center Libraries as do faculty or staff with cross appointments in specific academic departments for teaching or research purposes.
Will UTSA students, faculty, and staff have access to the Health Science Center Libraries?
The Health Science Center Libraries are not open to the public, so UTSA students, faculty and staff will not have access to the library unless the student is in a dual enrollment program. Faculty and staff with cross appointments will have access to the Health Science Library. Access is only possible with an active UT Health San Antonio ID badge and network account.
What are the access policies for UTSA Libraries’ physical resources and collections?
Health Science Center students, faculty, and staff can use physical collections on site in the UTSA Libraries such as the John Peace Library or the Downtown Campus Library. Since our library systems are not yet fully integrated, you will not be able to check out materials. However, you can use the Health Science Center Libraries’ interlibrary loan services to borrow UTSA materials until the library systems are fully integrated.
Special Collections at UTSA are open to all students, faculty, staff, and the general public during posted hours by appointment only. Special collections materials must be viewed and used on-site at the location where the collections are housed.
