Dr. Russel J. Reiter, A History of Melatonin: Of Swimming Ghosts, Space Exploration, and its Ubiquitous Distribution

Melatonin is a fascinating hormone secreted by a tiny endocrine gland located at the center of the brain. This presentation will cover the origins of discovery and the implications of melatonin research.

Dr. Russel J. Reiter is a professor in the Department of Cell Systems and Anatomy at UT Health San Antonio.  In addition to his Ph.D., Dr. Reiter has received four honorary M.D. degrees and one honorary D.Sc. degree from international universities.  His research relates to the multiple receptor-independent and receptor-dependent actions of melatonin in humans, animals, and plants. Dr. Reiter has received numerous awards for his research and has published numerous research papers, reviews, and chapters. He has also written and edited 25 books.  In 2014, Dr. Reiter was named one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.  As a result, he has been an invited speaker to more than 300 international meetings and symposia.  Dr. Reiter is also the Co-Editor of Melatonin Research, and Founder and past Editor of the Journal of Pineal Research.
