Briscoe Library: 40 Years Strong

40 years ago, this month, the Dolph Briscoe, Jr. Library was officially dedicated. The dedication took place on November 14th, 1985 and was attended by UT System Board of Regents Members, local figures, library staff, university affiliates, and a packed crowd.
The library, named for former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe Jr., was the first building on the UT Health Campus to be named for an individual. Dolph Briscoe, Jr. was Governor of Texas from 1973-1979. He was in attendance with his wife, Janey Briscoe, herself a UT System regent.
“I have a deep feeling of pride and an overwhelming feeling of humility on this great
occasion. It is a particular honor for me to have this library as part of the health science center in San Antonio. It will be instrumental in delivering top quality care to the people of this state and particularly the people in South Texas.” – Dolph Briscoe, Jr.
After opening remarks, the library’s name, mounted out front of the building, was unveiled from under a drape by Mrs. Briscoe. This sign still remains in front of the library building to this day.
